Home insurance FAQ
I am moving house. Do I need to arrange a new household
insurance policy?
No. There is no need to arrange a new
policy as we can change your address and transfer cover to your new
house at any time.
If necessary we can also provide temporary cover at both your new
and old addresses. Call us on 0844 892 1387.
If we also insure your car, we can change the address under that
policy at the same time.
What do you mean by the term "Buildings Sum Insured?"
The sum insured is the amount of money for
which your home is covered. It is the most your insurers will pay
under any circumstances. You must calculate an adequate sum insured
to avoid claims being reduced because of under insurance. Regular
checks should be made to ensure it remains correct and it is your
responsibility to get the sum insured right.
The sum insured under a buildings policy must be the full
rebuilding cost of the home. The market value of your home or
council tax band valuation has no direct relationship to the
rebuild cost of your home. You can instruct a member of the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors to prepare a professional
rebuilding cost assessment for insurance purposes.
Are my shed buildings/greenhouse and boundary fences
insured?
Yes, provided that we are insuring your
home buildings under your policy. You should note that the cover
for damage to walls, gates and fences excludes storm damage.
If subsidence occurs to my outbuildings or swimming pool am I
covered under my house buildings policy?
Yes. You would be covered provided your
policy includes subsidence cover and as long as the main house
building is also affected by subsidence at the same time.
What is Index Linking?
You must make sure that your building and
contents sums insured are kept up to date. Your policy contains an
index linking clause. This simply means that your sum insured is
altered automatically whenever there is a change in the costs
according to various indices such as:
Buildings - the house rebuilding cost index prepared by the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
Contents the Retail Price Index (consumer durable section or an
appropriate alternative index).
No additional premiums will be required for the indexed adjustments
during the currency of your policy, but renewal premium will be
calculated on the basis the adjusted sums insured. It is your duty
to keep us up to date by telling us of any improvements to your
house or acquisitions of new contents which increase the overall
value. You must not rely on the index linking alone to keep your
sums insured up to date. You should review your cover every few
years.
